The quickest way out

PayPal Betting

About 4 minutes for a withdrawal, instant in, and a name-match rule that catches a small number of people every week. Also the funding sources PayPal will not allow for gambling.

PayPal is the fastest route out of a LadBet account by a clear margin, and that is the main reason to use it. The trade-off is an extra layer of rules: PayPal has its own conditions for gambling transactions on top of ours, and a decline can come from either side.

It is also the method where the failure modes are least obvious, because a refusal at their end reaches us as a generic response and reaches you as a message that explains nothing. Most of this page is therefore about the conditions rather than the mechanics, since the mechanics almost never go wrong.

Paying in

Instant, from £10. Selecting PayPal at the cashier hands you to PayPal’s own approval screen and back again.

What PayPal will fund it from

A linked bank account, a debit card, or an existing PayPal balance. It will not fund a gambling transaction from a credit card, a PayPal Credit facility, or Pay in 3, because British law bans credit funding for gambling and PayPal enforces that at their end. An account whose only funding source is a credit card will simply decline, often without a clear explanation.

If a deposit fails at the PayPal step

The reason is with PayPal rather than with us and we receive only a generic response. Their own transaction history usually states it plainly, and it is almost always either a funding source problem or a security hold on the PayPal account itself.

Getting paid

Around 4 minutes in the median case, which is the fastest figure on our withdrawal times page.

Where the money lands

In the PayPal balance itself, straight away. Moving it on to a bank account from there is a separate step timed by PayPal rather than by us, and that transfer is usually same-day but occasionally next-working-day. It is worth knowing the difference before concluding a withdrawal is slow.

Deposit first

A PayPal withdrawal requires a PayPal deposit to have been made first, which is the same return-path rule that applies to every method. Anything above the amount deposited via PayPal can go to another method in your own name.

The name-match rule

The PayPal account has to be registered in the same name as the betting account. This catches a handful of people every week and it has no flexibility.

Why it fails

Usually a married name on one and a maiden name on the other, or a shortened first name on the betting account against a full legal name on PayPal. The check is automated and it compares the registered names rather than the person behind them.

Fixing it

Update whichever record is out of date so the two match. PayPal can change a registered name with documentation, and we can update an account name through support with the same. Once they agree, the payment goes through on the next attempt.

Business accounts

Not accepted. A PayPal business account is a different entity from the individual holding the betting account, so it fails the same rule for the same reason.

Why PayPal is faster than a card

Not a small difference — roughly half the time of a debit card withdrawal — and the reason is structural rather than preferential.

One less hop

A card payout travels from us, through the card scheme, to the issuing bank, and is then posted to an account by that bank on its own schedule. A PayPal payout travels from us to PayPal and stops there, because PayPal is itself the destination. The balance is available the moment it lands, and the step that usually causes the wait — a bank deciding when to post a gambling credit — simply is not in the chain.

The step you add back

Moving money from PayPal to a bank account puts that hop back in, on PayPal’s timetable rather than ours. For somebody who leaves a balance in PayPal, the four-minute figure is the whole story. For somebody who empties it to a current account immediately, the honest comparison against a card is much closer.

PayPal and safer gambling

One feature worth knowing about, because it sits outside us entirely.

PayPal offers its own gambling block in account settings, which stops gambling transactions across every merchant at once. Like a bank block, it is enforced away from the gambling account and has its own cooling-off period before it can be lifted. For anybody who wants a hard stop rather than a limit they control, that combination is more robust than anything an operator can offer. Our own tools sit alongside rather than in place of it.

Common questions

How quickly does a PayPal withdrawal arrive?

About 4 minutes into the PayPal balance. Moving it on to a bank account is a separate step timed by PayPal.

Why was my PayPal deposit declined?

Most often the funding source. PayPal will not fund gambling from a credit card, PayPal Credit or Pay in 3. Their own transaction history usually states the reason.

Does the PayPal name have to match?

Yes, exactly. A married name against a maiden name, or a shortened first name, will fail the automated check.

Can I use a PayPal business account?

No. It is a different entity from the individual holding the betting account.

Can I withdraw to PayPal without depositing with it?

No. The return-path rule applies to PayPal as to every other method.
