Settlement is the least glamorous part of a bookmaker and the part that generates the most correspondence, because it is the point at which an opinion about what happened meets an official record of what happened. Those two things agree most of the time and the interesting cases are the rest.

Where a settled bet lives

Bet history, in the account menu, on both the website and the app. It is the authoritative record of what you backed, at what price and how it was settled.

What the entry shows

The selection, the stake, the price at which the bet was accepted, the return, and the settlement status. On racing, it also shows the price actually paid where best odds guaranteed has applied, which is the simplest way to confirm the concession worked rather than taking it on trust.

Searching it

Filters by sport, by date range and by settled or open status. That was added in September after enough people pointed out that scrolling through three months of Saturdays to find one bet was not a reasonable ask.

How long each sport takes

Settlement waits on an official source rather than on a final whistle, and the gap between those two varies enormously by sport.

Why racing waits for the weigh-in

A race is not official until the jockeys have weighed in and any enquiry has been resolved. A result that looks certain on the line can change in the following five minutes through a disqualification or an amended placing, and settling before that would mean unwinding bets afterwards. The few minutes of waiting are the alternative to that, and they are the better option.

Why golf takes longest

A golf leaderboard is provisional until scorecards are signed and any penalty strokes are applied. Since a single penalty can move a player two places and, through dead heat rules, change what every place bet on that tournament pays, settling early would be actively harmful.

When a result is corrected

Governing bodies occasionally amend a result after we have settled on it. It is rare and it has a defined treatment.

We resettle

Bets affected by the correction are settled again on the amended result. Somebody who lost on the original result and won on the corrected one is paid, and this is the more common direction because corrections usually follow an appeal by the aggrieved party.

We do not claw back

A payment already made in good faith on the original official result is not reclaimed. That is a policy choice rather than an obligation, and it exists because the alternative — taking money back out of an account days later for something the customer had no part in — is not a defensible thing to do to somebody.

Obvious pricing errors are different

A price that was plainly wrong when it was offered, a palpable error in the trade term, is treated separately and the bet is settled at the correct price. That is covered properly on the betting rules page because it is a rule people are entitled to be suspicious of and it deserves a full explanation rather than a line.

If a bet has not settled

Work through this before contacting anyone, because three of the four causes resolve themselves.

1. Check the official source. An event that finished on television may not yet be official, particularly in racing and golf.
2. Check the market. An in-play market on a match that has ended can lag the result market by a few minutes.
3. Check for a void. A void leg in a multiple changes the shape of the bet and it will show as void rather than as unsettled.
4. Then ask. If an hour has passed after an official result, chat can look at the specific bet with a reference.

Voids, and what they do to a multiple

A void leg does not lose a multiple. It drops out and the remaining legs run on at their own prices, so a four-fold becomes a treble at the price the other three legs multiply to.

The practical effect

Your potential return falls, sometimes dramatically if the void leg was the long-priced one, but the bet is still live. This surprises people who expect a void to refund the whole stake, and the logic is straightforward: you have a bet on three things that are still happening, so there is still a bet.

When every leg voids

The stake is returned in full. That is the only circumstance in which a multiple is refunded outright, and it is why an entire card being abandoned produces a very quiet afternoon rather than a busy one.
