Registration is done on the operator’s own site rather than here, and it asks for the things British law requires and nothing beyond them. What follows is what to expect, in order, so nothing on the way through is a surprise.

  1. Name and date of birthExactly as they appear on your bank records. A shortened first name is the most common cause of a failed automatic check.
  2. Address and postcodeYour current residential address. This is what the age and identity check runs against.
  3. Email and mobileBoth are used for security messages, so a number you actually carry matters.
  4. Password and confirmationThree unrelated words are stronger than a short string of punctuation.
  5. First depositFrom £10, on a debit card or a wallet in your own name.

The age and identity check

Every British operator has to confirm that a new customer is over 18 before they gamble, and confirm who they are before any money leaves. The first check happens automatically against public records at the moment you register.

Why it usually passes silently

Electoral roll data plus credit-reference records cover most adults with a settled address. If your details match, nothing is asked of you and the account is simply open. That is the path under four hours of new accounts take.

Why it sometimes does not

Recent movers, people not on the electoral roll, and anyone who has typed a shortened name into the form will fail the silent check and be asked for a document instead. That is inconvenience, not suspicion — the verification page lists what passes first time.

Setting limits at the start

The most useful two minutes you will spend on a gambling account are the two minutes after opening it, setting a deposit limit while you are still thinking clearly about what you want to spend.

A limit is easier to loosen than to need

Tightening a limit takes effect immediately. Loosening one waits out a cooling-off period on purpose, so a limit set now cannot be swept aside in the middle of a bad evening. Deposit limits explains the mechanics, and none of it costs anything.

Your first deposit

The minimum is £10 on every method. Debit cards and wallets are instant; bank transfer is not, and it is a poor choice for a first deposit because the account sits idle while it clears.

The payment instrument has to be in your own name. A card belonging to a partner or a parent will be declined even with their blessing, because operators are not permitted to accept third-party funds. Details are on the payments page.

Credit cards are refused. That is not our policy but British law, in force since April 2020, and it applies to every licensed operator equally.

What to do before your first bet

  • Turn on two-factor authentication in security settings.
  • Set a deposit limit that reflects a month, not an evening.
  • Finish verification now rather than at your first withdrawal.
  • Read the welcome offer terms before you place the qualifying bet, not after.
  • If you have never had a bet before, start here rather than on the in-play page.

Documents, if you are asked for one

Being asked for a document is not a sign anything is wrong. It means the silent check could not match your details, which for a recent mover is close to guaranteed.

What passes first time

For identity: a passport photo page, a UK driving licence, or a national identity card, photographed flat in daylight with all four corners showing. For address: a bank statement, a council tax bill or a utility bill from the last three months, showing your name and the address exactly as you typed it.

What gets rejected

Screenshots of a banking app, documents with the account number blacked out so heavily the name goes with it, photographs taken at an angle that crops a corner, and mobile phone bills — which are not accepted as proof of address anywhere in the industry. Sending one of those costs you a day, and the verification page lists the rest.

Accounts we will not open

Some applications get turned down, and it is fairer to say why in advance than to let somebody find out halfway through.

Fine

  • Living in the UK and aged 18 or over
  • A debit card or wallet in your own name
  • A previous account that was closed at your own request, outside a self-exclusion

Not possible

  • Under 18, whatever the circumstances
  • Registered with GAMSTOP, which we cannot override
  • A second account where one already exists
  • Payment instruments belonging to somebody else

Stake what sits comfortably inside a normal week and you will enjoy it more. GamCare staffs a free line on 0808 8020 133 and it costs nothing to use. You have to be 18 to bet at all.

Common questions

How long does opening an account take?

Two to three minutes to fill in, and for most people the account is usable immediately because the age check passes in the background.

Will registering affect my credit score?

No. The identity check is a soft search. It is visible to you on your credit file but not to lenders, and it does not affect the score.

Can I open a second account?

No. One account per person. Duplicates are closed when we find them and any promotional credit on them is removed.

Do I have to deposit straight away?

No. An account can sit open with nothing in it. You will need a balance before you can place a bet or take the welcome offer.

What if I am registered with GAMSTOP?

GAMSTOP blocks registration across every licensed British site and we cannot make an exception. The block runs its full term by design.
