Tools, limits and help that is not ours
Safer Gambling at LadBet
Deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion, all in settings and all free. Free confidential advice is on 0808 8020 133, at any hour, from people with no connection to this company.
This page is written by a gambling company, and that is worth stating plainly at the top of it, because it means everything below should be read with the obvious conflict of interest in mind. What follows is therefore weighted towards the things that do not depend on us: the helpline, the national scheme, and the bank-level blocks that work whether or not we cooperate.
The tools we do control are real and they work. They are also, by definition, tools an operator can see you using, and for anybody whose gambling has become a genuine problem the independent routes below are the more important half of this page.
Free help, independent of us
Start here rather than with our settings, if the question is whether gambling has become a problem rather than how to manage a hobby.
The National Gambling Helpline
Free on 0808 8020 133, open every hour of every day, run by GamCare. You do not have to give a name, you are not talking to anybody connected to a gambling company, and there is nothing being sold. It is also the right number if you are worried about somebody else rather than yourself, which is a call they take constantly.
GAMSTOP
A national scheme that blocks registration and sign-in across every licensed British gambling site at once. It takes a few minutes, it is free, and no operator can override it — including us, including with your consent. How it works is a page of its own.
Bank and card blocks
Most UK banks offer a gambling block that works at the card level, stopping payments before they reach any operator. PayPal offers one too. These are strong precisely because they sit outside the gambling account and carry their own cooling-off period before they can be lifted, usually up to 48 hours.
The tools in your account
All of them sit in settings, all of them are free, and not one of them requires a conversation with anybody at all.
| Tool | Effect | Tighten | Loosen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | caps money in per day, week or month | immediate | after a cooling-off period |
| Loss limit | caps net losses over a period | immediate | after a cooling-off period |
| Session reminder | interrupts at a set interval | immediate | immediate |
| Time-out | blocks access, 1 day to 6 weeks | immediate | not possible |
| Self-exclusion | closes the account, 6 months up | immediate | not possible |
Why loosening always waits
Because the moment somebody most wants a limit gone is the moment it is doing the most work. A cooling-off period on an increase is the entire mechanism that makes a limit meaningful; without it the setting would look like a protection and function as a speed bump. We get complaints about this and we are not changing it.
Session reminders are underrated
They cap nothing and interrupt at a fixed interval, which sounds trivial and is the single most useful setting for most people. Time disappears on a screen that shows continuous sport, and a quiet note at thirty or sixty minutes restores the only piece of information a session actually removes.
Blocking software
The third layer, alongside a scheme registration and a bank block, and the one fewest people know about.
Gamban, BetBlocker and similar tools install on a phone or a computer and prevent gambling sites loading at all. Several are free, and they close the gap that GAMSTOP cannot reach — unlicensed operators, which are the sites that actively market to people who have excluded. Installed on every device rather than one, they are the most complete of the three layers, and like the others they carry their own delay before they can be removed.
Signs worth noticing
Not a diagnostic test. These are the patterns that come up repeatedly in the accounts of people who have described things going wrong, and recognising one early is considerably cheaper than recognising it late.
- Betting more after a loss to get it back, rather than less.
- Stakes creeping up because the old ones no longer feel like anything.
- Gambling at times you would not have chosen — at work, at three in the morning, during something else.
- Money for gambling coming from somewhere it was not meant to.
- Hiding how much or how often from somebody who would ask.
- Relief at a win rather than enjoyment.
The first of those is the one worth watching for in yourself. Raising the stake to recover a losing bet is the habit that most often pulls a session away from the figure somebody set out with, and it is easy to spot once you know to look. A deposit limit set in advance quietly takes the decision out of that moment.
Some plain facts about the odds
Most gambling harm is built on beliefs about probability that are simply wrong, and correcting them is more useful than any amount of encouragement to play responsibly.
Nothing is ever due
A roulette wheel that has landed on red eight times is exactly as likely to land on red next spin as it was the first time. A slot that has paid nothing for an hour is in the same position as one that has just paid out. Every spin is independent of every spin before it, and systems built on the opposite belief — the great majority of them — lose money faster than betting at random.
Doubling after a loss does not work
The oldest system in gambling is to double the stake after each loss so that one win recovers everything. It fails for two reasons that always arrive together: table limits cap how far the doubling can go, and the stake required grows faster than anybody expects. Eight consecutive losses from a £5 start requires £1,280 on the ninth bet, to win £5.
Return to player is not a session
A slot advertised at 96% is describing a figure that emerges over millions of spins across every player of that game. It says nothing at all about an evening, and treating it as a rate of return on a session is one of the most expensive misreadings available.
The margin is in every price
On the sportsbook there is no random generator, there is a margin. Add up the implied chances across a market and they come to more than a hundred per cent; the excess is the bookmaker’s edge. It is not hidden — the odds page shows how to calculate it — but it is permanent, and no selection strategy removes it.
If you are worried about somebody else
The helpline takes these calls constantly and they are not a lesser category.
0808 8020 133 will talk to a partner, a parent or a friend, free and confidentially, about what to do. They will not contact the person on your behalf and they will not tell you to confront anybody. What they will do is help you think about a conversation that has a chance of going somewhere, which is a genuinely difficult thing to do alone.
What we cannot do is discuss somebody else’s account with you, close it at your request, or confirm whether it exists. That is data protection rather than obstruction, and it applies however serious the concern. What you can do is ask them to look at GAMSTOP, which they can register for themselves in a few minutes.
Where the money and the time go
Two practical habits that do more than any setting, and neither requires telling anybody anything.
Look at the actual numbers
Bet history shows every stake and every return over any period you choose. Most people substantially underestimate the total, because losses are remembered individually and wins are remembered as a category. Adding up a month once a year is uncomfortable and it is the single most useful thing anybody can do with the tools already in the account.
Notice the pace difference
A football bet resolves in ninety minutes and a slot resolves in three seconds. The same stake behaves completely differently across an evening, and somebody who has bet on sport for years without difficulty can find a casino session moves faster than their judgement does. That is not a character flaw; it is arithmetic about speed, and it is worth knowing before rather than after.
What we do at our end
Set out for completeness rather than as reassurance, since a customer has no way to verify most of it.
Monitoring
Accounts are monitored for patterns associated with harm — sharp increases in deposits, extended sessions at unusual hours, repeated failed deposits followed by successful ones. Where a pattern appears, we are required to act, which may mean a message, a prompt to set a limit, or in clear cases a restriction applied without being asked.
Advertising
Marketing stops entirely for anybody who has self-excluded or set a time-out, and it can be switched off at any point in settings without affecting the account. Nothing we send is permitted to target somebody who has excluded, and that is a licence condition rather than a policy.
What we will not do
Offer a bonus to somebody whose pattern suggests harm, override a block of any kind, or treat a self-exclusion as a negotiation. None of those is discretionary.
Keeping it enjoyable
Two habits do more for a season of betting than any tip ever will, and neither of them costs anything.
The first is deciding the figure before the fixture. A stake settled in advance, at a level you would happily repeat next weekend, keeps the whole thing where it belongs: a bit of interest on a Saturday afternoon rather than something to think about on Monday morning. The tools above exist to make that decision stick, and that is the only job they have.
The second is noticing when it has stopped being fun. That happens to people, it is nothing to be embarrassed about, and it is a great deal easier to deal with early than late. The routes above that sit outside this company are there for exactly that moment, and using one of them early is a sensible piece of housekeeping rather than a last resort.
Free, confidential advice is on 0808 8020 133 at any hour of any day, from people with no connection to us and nothing at all to sell. Plenty of the calls they take are from somebody who simply wanted a second opinion about their own habits, and that is a perfectly good reason to ring.
Betting is at its best when it stays a bit of fun, so set the pace that suits you. There is a free line on 0808 8020 133 with nothing at all to sell you. The door opens at 18 and not before.
Common questions
Where can I get free help?
The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free and confidential at any hour, run by GamCare with no connection to any operator.
How do I set a deposit limit?
In account settings, per day, week or month. A tighter limit applies immediately; a looser one waits out a cooling-off period.
Can I block myself from every gambling site at once?
Yes, through GAMSTOP. It covers every licensed British site and no operator can override it.
Can you close somebody else’s account for them?
No. We cannot discuss or act on another person’s account, which is data protection rather than obstruction. They can register with GAMSTOP themselves in a few minutes.
Will you stop sending me marketing?
Yes, immediately, from settings. It also stops automatically and permanently on a self-exclusion or a time-out.
Can a self-exclusion be lifted early?
No. Not by you, not by support, not by anyone, for its full term. That is the point of it.
